    JASCO Japanese Language Class Fall 2017

    -Japanese 1 -

    Do you like Japanese Food? Do you like Sake?

    Do you want to say "Hi" to Japanese coworkers in Japanese? 


    Come join us and learn some practice Japanese communication skills with JASCO! This 10-week-long "survival" Japanese course will teach you basic everyday phases - such as how to order your favorite food at a Japanese restaurant! For students with no previous Japanese language study.


    **Fall Term: Course Details**

    When:  Tuesdays, October 10 – December 19, 6:30 - 7:20 PM (10 weekly class sessions, with November 21 off for Thanksgiving break)

    JASCO Japanese Language Class Fall 2017

    -Japanese 2, part 1 -

    Japanese 2, part 1 is full! However, we do have a waitlist set up, in the case that a registrant is unable to participate.



    Come join us every Wednesday evening and learn some Japanese language skills with JASCO!


    This class teaches the basics of both spoken and written Japanese. During the session, you will learn basic grammar (verb, noun, adjective), vocabulary, and grammar, along with the hiragana and katakana writing systems.


    The Fall 2017 Japanese 2 course is Part 1 of a 4-part curriculum, continuing in the Winter 2018 session, using The Japan Foundation’s Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture Starter A1 Coursebook.


    (Please note that in previous sessions, this class was offered as Japanese 1 and Japanese Beginner 1B– we have changed our course names beginning in Fall 2017 based on feedback from our students in order to better reflect the course structure.)

    This course designed for students who have been studying Japanese for one year or less. During the class, students explore Japanese sentence structure and vocabulary, expanding their ability to talk about their lives and experiences, while also continuing to study the Japanese written language.    


    Part of a series that began in Spring 2017, this course uses the Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture Elementary 1 A2 Coursebook. It will start with Lesson 10 of that book - if you have any questions about the materials, please e-mail JASCO at jasco@jas-co.org.

    Join JASCO and Shadowbox Live as we explore the inspirations and influences of David Mack's Kabuki: Circle of Blood.


    This fall, Shadowbox Live will be presenting its most ambitious project yet: Circle of Blood. Inspired by David Mack's graphic novel Kabuki:Circle of Blood, this show melds live and digital performances in a multi-media experience in which stage performances paired with projection art and video that utilize Mack's original drawings.


    Both Mack's story and Shadowbox Live's adaption draw heavily from many aspects of Japanese culture, from handscrolls, to noh and kabuki theater, to contemporary cinema. To highlight and celebrate the Japanese elements present within the story, JASCO will be partnering with Shadowbox Live to present a series of free pre-show lectures from 5:30-6:15 on Wednesday, October 18 and Wednesday, October 25 exploring these inspirations and influences. . 


    On Wednesday, October 18, JASCO Executive Director Dr. Benjamin Pachter will give a presentation on the Japanese theatrical influences on Circle of Blood, exploring both traditional genres like noh and kabuki and modern ones like cinema and anime. Then, on Wednesday, October 25, Japanese art scholar Dr. Sara Sumpter will explore the Japanese artistic influences found in Circle of Blood, such as Japanese hand scrolls, vengeful spirit stories, and the works that inspired David Mack.  


    No ticket is required to attend these lectures, although you're encouraged to attending the evening performance of Circle of Blood that follows the lectures.     About the Presenters:


    Dr. Benjamin Pachter is Executive Director of the Japan-America Society of Central Ohio. He is also an ethnomusicologist specializing in Japanese performance arts, having received a doctorate in Ethnomusicology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2013. His research interests include Japanese drumming and festival music, the development of repertoire and performance practice, and the worldwide spread of Japanese culture. 


    Dr. Sara Sumpter is a writer, editor, and independent scholar. She received a doctorate in Japanese art history from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016. Her research interests include narrative art, horror tropes and iconography, theories of the supernatural and the grotesque, and sociopolitics.

    Poetry in Glass


    Join JASCO and Glass Axis for a special reception on Friday, November 10, 6:00-8:00 PM. 

    This November, JASCO will be partnering with the Glass Axis glass art studio and facility to host a special exhibition by Japanese glass artist Daisuke Takatomi and jewelry designer Keiko Iwamatsu.

    Beginning at the end of October, Mr. Takatomi and Ms. Iwamatsu will be in residence at Glass Axis creating unique pieces of art that will be on display and available for sale at Glass Axis beginning on Friday, November 10. In commemoration of the opening of this exhibition, JASCO will be holding a special reception on Friday, November 10 from 6 to 8 PM. The Glass Axis facility will be open as part of Franklinton Fridays, a special art crawl held on the second Friday of every month.
