KOTO WORKSHOP WITH THE COLUMBUS KOTO ENSEMBLE

    Saturday, December 8, 2018
    1:00-230 PM
DEC Training Center, 565 Metro Place S, Dublin, OH 43017

JASCO presents The Columbus Koto Ensemble for a special lecture and workshop!

Since 2014, The Columbus Koto Ensemble has brought a taste of Japan to our audiences through the koto, the national instrument of Japan. The koto is similar to a Western harp or dulcimer. The aim is to show the diversity and versatility of the koto. Their repertoire includes a wide range of music, from traditional works, mesmerizing modern compositions, and innovative cover songs of rock, pop, and anime favorites. Audience members are given an opportunity to try the koto. The ensemble will guide participants in learning to play the famous song, "Sakura Sakura" on the koto. This performance will include a 17-string bass koto.

Lecture topics will include: Japanese music, koto traditions, music theory, and personal stories of living, working, and learning in Japan.

The Columbus Koto Ensemble is Julie A. Palmer, Jessica Entis, and Lori Fannin. These women have training from music schools in Japan as well as the United States and have the expertise to educate and entertain. The Columbus Koto Ensemble has performed at Antioch College, The Columbus Asian Festival,

Summer Festival with the Japan/America Society of Kentucky, Dawes Arboretum, The Columbus Museum of Art, Lakeside Chautauqua, Ohayocon, and Midoricon.

Registration is free for JASCO members, $10 for non-members.
