What is Children's Day?

Children's Day (Kodomo no hi), also known as Boy's Day (Tango no sekku), is celebrated on May 5th. On this day, children are respected for their individual strengths, and happiness is wished upon them.

Families often celebrate by having a big celebration attended by grandparents and other relatives. Decorations such as koinobori (koi-shaped windsocks) are hung around cities and homes. Chimaki and Kashiwamochi are served to build vigor and ward off illness.

There are multiple activities you can do to celebrate Children's Day such as learn how to make kashiwa mochi, iris bath bombs, and origami kabuto and koinobori. You can also watch short movies such as Kintaro.
